Where can you see the local seal colony?
Ramsgate has a resident seal colony located nearby at the mouth of the River Stour near Shellness Point on the edge of the Pegwell Bay Nature Reserve.
You can view the seals during low tide when they haul out onto the mudflats and sandbanks to rest and sunbathe.
Because seals are highly sensitive to disturbances, they are best viewed either from designated land-based vantage points with binoculars or via organized, eco-friendly boat tours departing from Ramsgate Royal Harbour and the Seal Kayaking Safari from the Western Undercliff.
| Viewing Method | Description |
|---|---|
| Land-based vantage points | Bring binoculars to see them on the distant mudflats at low tide. |
| Pegwell Bay Country Park | Best viewed from the park pathways looking across the Stour Estuary. |
| The Old Hoverport / Coastline | Accessed via the paths behind the Viking Ship. Guided nature walks are available on foot. |
| By Boat | |
| Sea Searcher | Water-based tour departing from Ramsgate Harbour (West Pier). Offers a 90-minute traditional boat tour timed with the tides. Engines are cut near the colony. |
| River Runner | Water-based tour departing from Ramsgate Harbour (West Pier). Runs a 1 hour 20 minute family-friendly, wheelchair-accessible catamaran trip. |
| Go2Sea | Water-based tour departing from Ramsgate Harbour (Pier Yard). Operates Year-round Seal & Wildlife Safaris using stable commercial vessels. |
| By Kayak | |
| Seal Kayak Safaris | Low-impact water excursion. Guided 3-hour group canoe or kayak safaris traveling directly through the nature reserve. |
