Monkton Nature Reserve
Monkton Nature Reserve, managed by the Thanet Countryside Trust, is situated in an 16 acre abandoned chalk quarry on the Isle of Thanet in East Kent. There are over 350 species of flowering plant, including 8 species of orchid, and 25 species of butterfly have been recorded, along with innumerable other species of insect, mammal and bird-life. The reserve is also home to the first artificial bat cave to be constructed in the UK.
We have a variety of children’s activities that will keep our younger visitors’ entertained, and encourage an interest in nature at the same time!
Our second-hand bookshop has an extensive range of approximately 10,000 books for sale, both fiction and non-fiction.
Monkton Nature Reserve is home to the Monkton Stargazers astronomy group and the two Thanet Observatories.
There is much of interest to see in the exhibition areas of the Field Study Centre, and entrance is FREE.
