The Grange
Set in its own private garden, The Grange offers a retreat from the outside world, within the thriving town of Ramsgate.
You can go on a tour and even stay here, in the home Pugin designed for himself and his family, this offers a unique chance to step into his colourful and idiosyncratic world. In his library, surrounded and sometimes interrupted by his large family, Pugin produced much of his finest work, working at prodigious speed as designs for the House of Lords and the Medieval Court at the Great Exhibition flowed effortlessly from his pen. He reserved some of his finest flourishes for his own home: some remain, others we have reinstated.
The house has a private chapel and a tower, from whose roof Pugin trained his telescope on ships in distress.
Dog policy :
Pet dogs are not allowed inside The Grange for overnight stays, as it is a Landmark Trust property with a strict no-dogs policy (except for certified assistance dogs).
Accessibility :
The Grange has a wheelchair-accessible main entrance and a ground-floor accessible toilet. Accessibility is limited to the ground floor; upper levels and the historic staircases are steep, narrow, and not suitable for visitors with limited mobility. The courtyard also has stony and cobbled surfaces.
Tours :
There are guided tours of the ground floor every Wednesday afternoon (except over Christmas and the New Year). Tours are at 2:00pm and 3:00pm.
History :
The Shrine of St Augustine, The Grange and St Edward’s Presbytery represents a complete vision of a mid-19th-century medieval Christian community.
