Ramsgate Royal Harbour is a stunning Grade II* listed landmark. It is the only harbour in the United Kingdom that has the official right to call itself “Royal”. It was granted royal status by King George IV in 1821. Click here for more historical information.
Ramsgate’s harbour is a defining characteristic of the town and today, the Royal Harbour effortlessly blends its 24/7 working industry, hosting commercial fishing fleets and offshore wind farm support vessels, with a thriving, cosmopolitan waterfront scene.
Activities :
The Harbour Marina area is a focal point for a number of activities throughout the year, including the stunning Ramsgate Illuminations (the boat owners decorate their boats with Christmas Lights and the Businesses in the Arches join in too).

Ramsgate’s local skippers can take you from the Ramsgate Royal Harbour to discover bays and beaches, as well as the wonderful wildlife, including our resident seal colony.

Steps to East Cliff & West Cliff :
The Kent Steps (Pugin Steps) provide harbour access to and from East Cliff. Jacob’s Ladder provides harbour access to and from West Cliff.
Landmarks :
There are several notable landmarks in the harbour, including :-
- The Obelisk : on the approach to the East Pier, this large monument was erected in 1822 to honour King George IV.
- The Clock House : a Grade II* listed 19th-century building currently undergoing a multi-million-pound restoration, due to re-open Autumn 2026.
- Jacob’s Ladder : a historic Grade II listed stone staircase.

Notable Boats in the Harbour :
Ramsgate Raven :
Look out for the colourful ‘Sea Cadets Raven‘ sitting above the Harbour Office. It’s one of the Ravens on the Ramsgate Raven Trail.
Dog Friendly :
Yes. Dogs are permitted on leads along the harbor walks and promenades.
Accessibility :
Ramsgate Royal Harbour features wide paved walkways, step-free routes around main quayside areas and dedicated blue badge parking bays, making it accessible for visitors with limited mobility.
Parking :
Pay & Display parking on the East & West Crosswalls, Military Road and Pier Yard and the East Pier. There is also the Ramsgate Harbour Multi-Story Car Park on Leopold Street.
