Ramsgate (West Pier) Lighthouse
The Ramsgate (West Pier) Lighthouse is an iconic, Grade II listed building located at the end of the western harbour arm. Erected in 1842, this historic 11-metre (36-foot) cylindrical stone tower stands as a major landmark within the UK’s only Royal Harbour.
Carved directly into the unpainted Cornish granite stonework is the Latin phrase “Perfugium Miseris“, which translates to “Refuge for those in need” or “Refuge for the unfortunate”. This reflects the harbour’s historic purpose as a safe haven during treacherous English Channel storms.
The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation operated by the Port of Ramsgate. While the interior tower itself is not open for public tours, the surrounding pier structure is completely accessible.
You can take a scenic walk down the West Pier to stand right beside the structure’s famous bright red door. The area at the end of the pier features public bench seating, making it a peaceful spot to watch passing boats, admire the coastline, and take in panoramic views of the Ramsgate Royal Marina.
