The Clock House
The Clock House is a historic, Grade II* listed 19th-century building on the quayside of Ramsgate Royal Harbour.
Built in 1817 and designed by Benjamin Wyatt and George Louch, it once housed the Ramsgate Meridian, used to calculate local mean time.
Ramsgate Meridian
A brass meridian line inside the Clock House marked the Ramsgate Meridian, from which Ramsgate Mean Time was calculated – 5 minutes and 41 seconds ahead of Greenwich. It didn’t last long however and with the advent of regular trains to Ramsgate, the town had to revert to standard GMT to stop people missing their boats!
Restoration & Regeneration
The Clock House is undergoing a major restoration/extension project. Click here to learn more about the regeneration project.
Once complete, the updated site will feature refreshed historical exhibition spaces and a brand-new adjacent cafe extension.
The Clock House is expected to reopen in Autumn 2026.
