Take a stroll along Ramsgate’s spectacular coast and you are walking through one of the town’s most unusual heritage stories. Set into the cliffs, gardens, chines and harbour approaches is a remarkable collection of Pulhamite rockwork – hand-crafted artificial stone designed to look like natural rock. Ramsgate is home to one of the largest and most ambitious examples of Pulhamite coastal landscaping in the country, with five Grade II listed seafront locations forming a nationally important open-air heritage trail.

What is Pulhamite?

Invented by the legendary nineteenth-century firm James Pulham & Son, Pulhamite is a highly realistic artificial stone. The Pulham’s guarded their secret cement recipe fiercely. They sculpted it by hand over cores of brick rubble, industrial waste, and even broken household pottery to mimic natural rock formations like sandstone. In some places, if you look closely at weathered sections of the rockwork, you can still spot clues to what lies beneath — including fragments of brick, rubble or other materials used to build up the hidden core before the artificial stone surface was sculpted by hand. It was so convincing that even geologists of the era were sometimes fooled!

1. Winterstoke Gardens and East Cliff (Winterstoke) Chine : Gifted to the town by Dame Janet Stancomb-Wills, Winterstoke Gardens is a peaceful cliff-top garden overlooking the sea. Its Pulhamite rock gardens, tiered planting and semi-circular Doric sun colonnade create one of Ramsgate’s most atmospheric viewpoints, linking formal architecture with the natural drama of the East Cliff.

2. Albion Place Gardens : Sitting above Madeira Walk, Albion Place Gardens offers panoramic views over Ramsgate’s Royal Harbour and coastline. The gardens are an ideal place to pause on a heritage walk, with Pulhamite features woven into the landscaped cliff edge and nearby historic terraces adding to the Victorian seaside setting.

3. Madeira Walk Rock Gardens and Cascade (1893–1894) : One of Ramsgate’s most dramatic seaside features, Madeira Walk turns the chalk cliff into a theatrical rocky gorge, complete with rugged Pulhamite strata, winding paths and a restored cascade. Look closely and you can see how the rockwork was shaped to imitate natural geology, creating the feel of a mountain pass beside the sea.

4. Royal Parade Harbour Arches : On the western side of the harbour, Pulhamite takes on a more robust civic role. The Royal Parade arches and retaining walls helped create a grand route between the harbour and West Cliff, combining practical engineering with decorative rockwork, terracotta details and sweeping harbour views.

5. West Cliff (Courtstairs) Chine : The dramatic zig-zag steps and chine connect the cliff top with the undercliff and beach below. Built in the later phase of Ramsgate’s Pulhamite story, the stairs are designed to feel embedded in the cliffside, turning a practical route to the shore into a memorable coastal experience.

For an easy visitor-friendly route, start at the East Cliff around Winterstoke Gardens and follow the trail west towards Albion Place Gardens, Madeira Walk and the Ramsgate Royal Harbour, finishing near Royal Parade and the West Cliff (Courtstairs) Chine. This direction gives a natural cliff-top and coastal walk while ending closer to the harbour, town centre amenities, cafés, toilets and transport links. The trail can also be followed in reverse – either way, you’ll enjoy sea views, heritage features and plenty of places to pause for something to eat or drink along the route.
