Walking tips for beginners

Walking is one of the best forms of exercise you can do. We’re encouraged to exercise for 150 minutes every week, and this can be for as little as 10 minute bursts, or suggested prolonged periods of 75 minutes. Regular exercise has been shown to improve our health, not just in terms of weight, but also blood pressure and it’s beneficial for our mental health.

It helps if you have some wonderful scenery to accompany you on your walk, it takes your mind off the exercise, and the coastal air is certainly good for the lungs!

Active Ramsgate has developed a number of different walks of varying lengths, suitable for all ages and for whatever fitness level you are.

It’s easy to get out of the habit of being active, but when you do, you’ll quickly see the benefits and wonder why you haven’t done it before.

If you’re ready to get out and about, and enjoy the scenery that Ramsgate has to offer, here are some tips to get you started.

How long should I walk for?

Research has shown that an hour a day will give you the most benefits to your health. However, you don’t have to do it all in one go, especially if you’re strapped for time. Try and fit in 10 minutes at lunchtime, park the car a little bit further from your destination or try and take the stairs as a way of getting in some extra walking time.

Do I need any special equipment?

Just a comfortable pair of shoes and clothes appropriate for the weather you’re walking in.

Where should I walk?

Anywhere you can! But if you’re looking for some fantastic walks, then Active Ramsgate has a number of routes to choose from. Simply download the maps from Visit Ramsgate, pull on your shoes, and head out the door.

What do I need to take with me?

Water to keep you hydrated, your Active Ramsgate route map, and your mobile phone in case you need it. Oh, and did we mention that we include places to stop and rest and have something to eat and drink along the way in our route guidance? So you’ll need some money, because a hot cup of tea, a cake or an ice cream will definitely motivate you to keep going!

We hope you love walking around Ramsgate as much as we do, and we’d love to see your pictures when out and about. Plus if you have any recommendations on where to stop for food and drink, please let us know! And congratulations on taking the first step!
