Montifiore Synagogue, Mausoleum & Woodlands
Montefiore Woodlands and Montefiore Synagogue are part of the legacy of Sir Moses Montefiore (1784–1885), one of the most prominent Victorian Jewish philanthropists and financiers in British history. Both sites sit on land that was originally part of his expansive country estate, East Cliff Lodge.
Montifiore Synagogue
The Montefiore Synagogue is a Grade II* listed building and is considered one of the top ten historic synagogues in Britain. After returning from a deeply moving trip to the Holy Land, Sir Moses purchased East Cliff Lodge in 1831. In gratitude for his safe journey, he commissioned the construction of a private synagogue on his estate, which opened in 1833. This building is highly significant as it is likely the first synagogue in Britain built by a Jewish architect. It features a painted stucco Regency exterior and an elegant marble-lined interior.
The synagogue follows the Sephardi rite. However as there is no longer a local Sephardi congregation in Ramsgate, regular weekly services are no longer held.
The Mausoleum
Right next to the synagogue stands a domed mausoleum built in 1862. Modeled directly after Rachel’s Tomb outside Bethlehem, it serves as the final resting place for both Sir Moses and his wife, Lady Judith Montefiore.
The Chiming Clock
Added in the 1860s, the synagogue features a chiming clock bearing the Latin phrase “Tempus Fugit” (Time Flies). This is an incredibly rare addition for a Jewish house of worship in Europe.
The Montifiore Woodlands
The Montefiore Woodlands provide a peaceful, tranquil green buffer surrounding the synagogue site.
The woodland marks the exact footprint of the Lady Judith Montefiore Theological College (a Yeshivah). Sir Moses founded the Tudor-style brick college in 1869 to honor his late wife’s memory. The college was a prominent hub for the study of Hebrew law and literature until it fell into disrepair and was demolished by the local council in the 1960s. Today, only the original flint walls and stone gate piers remain.
After decades of being overgrown and neglected, the land was transferred to the town council in 2011. It is now actively maintained by a volunteer group known as the Friends of Montefiore Woodland. They have cleared pathways, introduced wildflower patches, and restored the space into a community-led nature haven.
Accessibility :
The Synagogue and Mausoleum site is privately gated. The synagogue is typically closed to the general public, though it occasionally hosts open days or tours.
The woodlands are not considered wheelchair or pushchair accessible.
Walks :
The Woodlands, Synagogue and Mausoleum are part of a self guided walk ‘The Montifiore Heritage Trail’ – You can pick up a leaflet from the Visitors Information Centre.
Dog Friendly :
Dogs are allowed at Montefiore Woodland, but they are not permitted inside Montefiore Synagogue and Mausoleum.
