St. Augustine’s Cross

St Augustine’s Cross is a 19th-century Celtic stone monument marking where St Augustine is traditionally said to have landed in AD 597 and celebrated his first mass in Britain.

According to local legend, this is where the first meeting was held between King Æthelberht and the monk Augustine sent by Pope Gregory I as a missionary from Rome. Shortly thereafter, Æthelberht converted to Christianity, churches were established, and wider-scale conversion to Christianity began in the kingdom.

The site is a key stop on The Way of St Augustine, a popular local walking trail that connects to the Shrine of St Augustine in Ramsgate.

It is also a short walk (13 mins) from the finish point of The Contra Trail (Ramsgate to Pegwell).

The ‘Path of St Augustine’s Ride’ section of the Viking Trail starts here (St Augustine’s Cross to Monkton).

Park in the layby adjacent to the cross.

Accessibility :

St Augustine’s Cross is easily accessible for a brief stop but is located in a grassy field, making wheelchair access difficult.
