Christ Church

Christ Church is a Grade II listed Anglican parish church. Conceived in 1846–1847 during a period of intense local sectarian tension, it was built by the famous architect Sir George Gilbert Scott to provide an Evangelical counterpart to Augustus Pugin’s nearby Roman Catholic St. Augustine’s Church.

Built using Kentish ragstone with a slate roof and a distinct shingled broach spire. Gilbert Scott designed it in an Early English “lancet” style with rugged, plain walls and very minimal external ornamentation.

Vale Square

The square sits adjacent to Christ Church.

Vale Square is a highly sought-after, historic residential square celebrated for its intact Grade II listed Greek Revival architecture and its beautiful central community garden. Properties facing the square showcase elegant 1840s stucco façades, giant Ionic pilasters, horizontally rusticated bases, and classical details like terracotta urns and steeple finials.

The Hermitage (Thatched Cottage)

The Hermitage, located at 12 Vale Square, is a Grade II-listed, 19th-century thatched cottage that stands as the oldest building in Vale Square. Originally constructed circa 1818, the building predates the mid-1840s Victorian and Greek Revival housing development that defines the rest of the square.
